Elon Musk Starlink internet | on | Royal Caribbean cruise ship

I went on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Swell to put the SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet to the test.

Royal Caribbean's Wi-Fi pets have been hit or miss, depending on the boat. Indeed vessels with the advanced pets( generally new vessels), it was still slower than our internet at home.

For those of us that do not fully dissociate on sails, it's frequently frustrating to get websites and vids to load and indeed connect with musketeers and family at home. I considered it a cost of cruising, as being on a boat in the middle of the ocean does not give you numerous options. That is, until now.

before this month, Royal Caribbean Group filed with the Federal Dispatches Commission, telling cooperation with SpaceX Services, Inc. While certain airline carriers, including Hawaiian Airlines, have worked out deals to offer Starlink to their passengers, Royal Caribbean is the first voyage liner to file the request. At the time of the form, Starlink wasn't approved for use on moving vehicles, and the form called on the FCC to speed up the process.

Around the same time as the form, passengers started noticing that the Freedom of the Swell was accoutred

with Starlink satellite dishes, and still testing the service for those onboard.

Hoping that Starlink would still be laboriously testing, I reserved a weekend voyage on Freedom to try it for myself.

My thing was to test the Wi-Fi pets on board while sailing and at Perfect Day at CocoCay. There was no suggestion that Starlink would still be offered by the time I got on board, as it can be pulled down at any time during its testing. It also is not clear if or when other vessels will get this service.

For this sailing, we bought both the Voom Surf and Voom Surf & Stream internet packages to test. Royal Caribbean’s Voom service is boasted as the fastest internet on the ocean, being 6x briskly than other internet on the ocean.

On embarkation day, we headed to the Royal Promenade on sundeck 5 to start the testing process. Using two laptops, my hubby John tested the Surf & Stream while I tested the suds speed.

Once we started the speed test, it showed that we were connected to SpaceX Starlink, meaning that the Starlink trial onboard Freedom was still active.

It was incontinently clear that this internet service was over and beyond what Voom generally offered.

The suds package showed a download speed of9.01 Mbps and upload speed of20.34 Mbps. The Surf & Stream gave a download speed of77.03 Mbps and an upload speed of15.72 Mbps.

On both biases, we tried watching YouTube vids and Netflix shows to see how they would work. Both packages allowed us to incontinently start watching the vids, with no pause or buffering time.

Shortly after these tests, John moved to the Star Lounge to take a drone call using the Surf & Stream service. The drone called connected fluently, and there was no buffering or freezing for his videotape and audio.

latterly that autumn, he moved to our stateroom to take another Zoom call but realized that the service in our interior stateroom( 7121) was taking longer to connect, and softening his videotape. He ended up moving back down to sundeck 5 to finish the call.

Being in an interior stateroom, between the plenitude of essence walls, we were n’t surprised that the quality wasn’t as clear as it's in the open areas that have minimum Wi-Fi signal hindrance.

After he wrapped up his calls, the boat began to sail down, while we waited to see how the service held up formerly we were further from harborage.

That evening, about 3 hours after we set passage, we tried the tests again, from inside our stateroom. This time suds gave us a download speed of2.85 Mbps and upload pets of3.74 and Surf & Stream gave us a download speed of19.9 Mbps and upload speed of5.42 Mbps.

While the Surf & Stream pets were advanced, we set up that we were both suitable to stream shows on either package, with just a slight lading time for the suds package. On a coming morning, we docked in Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal’s private islet in the Bahamas. We were agitated to test the pets while on the islet, which includes wifi access if you bought a package on the boat.

To our surprise, the service remained strong indeed on the south side of the islet, with suds showing download pets of19.93 Mbps and upload pets of8.19 Mbps, while Surf & Stream showed download pets of52.50 Mbps and upload pets of10.10 Mbps.

latterly that day while sailing between CocoCay and Nassau, we tried using Facetime on each package to see how the videotape and audio quality would be. We were happy to see that both were crystal clear on each end.

On other sails while using Royal’s Voom service, the videotape would cut in and out, come vague, and the audio would lag, making it a frustrating experience for everyone involved.

On the last day of our voyage, we decided to take our test up a notch and live sluice on the Royal Caribbean Blog TikTok account for both the International Belly Flop competition and the Battle of the relations game show. Both events were suitable to stream without interruptions or softening.

Overall, Starlink has blown my cruising Wi-Fi prospects out of the water.

While we did notice that the service braked in our interior room, we were still suitable to stream shows and use the internet important faster than the typical Voom packages we’ve endured in the history.

We were particularly impressed with the suds package, which to our surprise allowed us to stream nearly as well as the Surf & Stream package. That may or may not remain a point if Starlink gets approved for general use on voyage vessels.

While numerous people continue to work ever, if espoused permanently Starlink will be a great result for working from a voyage, or just stay connected while out at the ocean.

The only strike to the Starlink service on Royal Caribbean that we set up will be having to acclimate our Wi-Fi prospects when sailing on other vessels without Starlink.
